Each year on 13 June, we mark International Albinism Awareness Day, a moment to promote understanding and visibility for people with albinism.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Open Eyes Foundation on their project for International Albinism Awareness Day in Rotterdam. The celebration took place on 13 June 2024 at the Erasmus Medical Centre.

Each year, International Albinism Awareness Day is celebrated on 13 June to promote understanding and inclusion. Every edition focuses on a specific theme; in 2024, the theme was “10 Years of IAAD – A Decade of Collective Progress.”

For this occasion, the Open Eyes Foundation organised both a celebration and the exhibition ‘Eyes on Us.’ Large portraits of people with albinism were displayed on trotters across the city, bringing visibility to a community that often remains overlooked.

Albinism is a genetic condition that occurs across all ages, genders and ethnicities. People with albinism stand out, whether they choose to or not, and through this project we aimed to raise awareness and give space to voices that are too often unheard.
